Yesterday returneth not ‘Yesterday returneth not’
is the title of the Degree Show of Rennie's Mlitt. Fine Art Practice in Glasgow School of Art. This is a quote taken from the fountain in Formakin Estate in Scotland, which was once derelict. The installation is about a now derelict site in Carlow, where once the last sugar factory of Ireland stood, which shut down in 2005, due to EU recommendations. This factory provided employment to many and was a source of income for farmers all over Ireland. The only remaining structure is an old sugar kiln tower. The other constructs of the factory have been carefully taken apart and transported to Eastern Europe to be rebuilt there. Many lost their jobs and income, and with that “a way of life”. The artist draws an analogy between the de- and re-constructed factory, and the installation, which is an abstract reconstruction of the kiln tower. |
